Prodigal Son by John Patrick Shanley

Austin: Jim! I almost forgot! Here.
Jim: What's this?
Austin: A book. You always have a book.
Jim: Thanks.
Austin: Oh. Look at the time. That's it. It's lights out for us.
(The lights soften. Austin goes. The lights dwindle down to only Jim.)
Jim: When it began, I was fifteen. Do you remember fifteen? You do. For me, it was a special, beautiful room in Hell. (Referring to his book) I'll leave this for the next guy.
(He places the book on the ground, and, as an afterthought, he places his pencil on top of it, then wanders away, disappearing into the surrounding dark. Only the book and pencil remain.)
